SHILLONG: The Umiam dam near Shillong in Meghalaya is on the verge of a shutdown.
This was stated by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday (June 6).
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma has stated that this situation has developed due to inadequate rainfall.
“Umiam is at the point of shutdown. We have not received the required level of rainfall for the past few months,” Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said.
He added: “The state is likely headed towards more difficult times if the situation continues.”
However, the Meghalaya chief minister said that the power situation that the state is facing is similar to those face by many parts of the country.

“We have to realise that this is a difficult situation, and we are doing our best to keep it stable as of now and hopefully,” said Conrad Sangma.
The Meghalaya chief minister further said: “We will be able to minimise things as we move forward.”
It may be mentioned here that Meghalaya is reeling under severe power deficit.
The general public in Meghalaya has been facing the wrath of power deficit in the state with no electricity in households for hours together in a day.
Notably, the Meghalaya high court had also recently slammed the state government and the electricity regulatory body – Meghalaya energy corporation limited (MeECL), for rampant power cuts.
