Barbie dolls, from the Mattel Toys has launched an exclusive collection of dolls inspired by the vibrant culture of India,  which includes the culture and traditions of Bhutia community from Sikkim.

The new range of dolls called the ‘Colours of India’ series has one Barbie dressed up in the traditional bakhu, a wraparound dress worn by Sikkim’s Bhutia community.

The outfit is red in colour with traditional motifs all over it with a bright blue border and sleeves. The Barbie’s hair is jet black, which is common to people hailing from the region.

The concept says Barbie visits the Gompas at Sikkim (written on the package). Set in the Himalayan state, the Gompas are Buddhist centre’s of learning and symbol of serenity.

The Colours of India series, will see Barbie in six different avatars, uniquely inspired by six heritage sites across the country. Each doll in the collection has been inspired by the beauty of India. Barbie has seamlessly weaved in elements of iconic Indian heritage destinations like Agra’s Taj Mahal and Maharashtra’s Ajanta Caves into this new collection that reflects contemporary designs in traditional wear.

These elements are flawlessly integrated in the dolls’ designs and packaging as well. The Barbie in the outfit from Sikkim, has a monastery and traditional motifs on the packaging.
