North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) was conferred with Kayakalp Award for the top rank among group-B hospitals/institutions of the Central government under Swachh Bharat Mission.

Kayakalp award to public health facilities was launched on May 15, 2015.

Union minister for Health and Family Welfare, JP Nadda gave away the award to NEIGRIHMS which was received by its director, DM Thappa during a function held at RML Hospital, New Delhi on April 19.

The team formally received the cheque worth Rs.1.5 crore, a citation, and a certificate.

A statement issued by NEIGRIHMS public relations officer, Kawal Krishen Pandita on Monday termed the award a “pride of the North East”.

Kayakalp award is given on assessment of all round performance in sanitation, hygiene, waste management, infection control, support services, hospital maintenance, energy conservation, innovative methods adopted and public grievance redressal mechanism.

“The Kayakalp assessment goes through three steps, internal assessment, peer review assessment and final assessment before the ranking is decided on the basis of overall marks obtained in all steps of assessment,” the statement said.

Thappa congratulated all stakeholders of NEIGRIHMS for this achievement in Swachhta Mission and complimented the dedication and hard work of all doctors and officials who worked hard in the past year to get the first rank.

“It is a moment of honour for all stakeholders of NEIGRIHMS,” Thappa said. He stressed for maintenance of rank in the coming years.

He assured that he would request the government to review the decision of keeping NEIGRIHMS in group-B hospitals/institutions.

“In 2015, NEIGRIHMs got 3rd position under the Kayakalp scheme and the gaps detected that year were rectified. In 2016, with a missionary zeal and NEIGRIHMS, by a little margin to AIIMS, New Delhi was given second rank.
