A huge consignment of ganja was seized by Customs sleuths from a bus on its way from Tripura towards Guwahati at Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Isaac Kharkongor, said that a rubber-laden truck bearing registration No UP53-ET-2607, on its way from Tripura towards Guwahati was intercepted by Customs officials at Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills district along the National Highway-44 on Wednesday.

“Two persons – the driver and the handyman – have been also apprehended and the truck along with the consignment of ganja has been seized,” informed officials.

The officials said that the ganjas were packed in 54 packets and that were concealed inside the truck. The ganjas weighed 497 kg.

As per media reports the driver of the truck has been identified as 40-year-old Rakesh Singh while the handyman has been identified as Rajesh Meena. Both of the driver and the handyman hail from Rajasthan.

Sources said, both the driver and the handyman have been arrested and the investigation is on.

The ganjas seized from the truck on Wednesday would cost lakhs of rupees in the market.

It may be mentioned that in one of the biggest recoveries, 2,058 kg of ganjas was seized in Meghalaya and one person was arrested, an official said on March 6, 2018.

Acting on a tip-off, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a truck at Diengpasoh near Shillong and recovered 2,058 kg ganja which was concealed under waste corrugated paper cartons and covered with tarpaulin, the official said.
