All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator from Dhing, Aminul Islam on Wednesday alleged that Muslims in Assam are being harassed and targeted by the government through eviction drives.

Aminul Islam during his visit to the Lahorijan eviction site said, “There seem to be selective evictions with an aim to harass the Muslims and minorities in the state.”

He added that first the government had thought that with the NRC most Muslims will be out of the state but when their plan failed, they (the government) started targetting them by labeling them as encroachers.

He added, “Most of the time, Muslims in the are being harassed and termed as foreigners but after the eviction, it was found that they were all citizens of Assam and India. None were proven as foreigners or illegal immigrants.”

Islam claimed, “The government has not been able to prove any evicted person as a foreigner and it is a challenge that it will not be able in the future as well. The minorities are only being harassed due to a communal agenda of the government.”
