After the incident of student leaders forcing a school teacher at Philobari in Assam’s Tinsukia to kneel down drew sharp criticisms on social media, the AASU has expelled one of its district-level leaders for his involvement in it.

Several organisations across the state have vehemently condemned the incident where a group of leaders from the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) was involved.

The video of the incident, which took place on October 11, has gone viral on social media.

In the video, it is witnessed how the principal of Philobari Senior Secondary School, Nirada Bora, was compelled to kneel down before her students on a road during a protest led by a district-level AASU leader.

Informing about the expulsion of the student leader, identified as Karna Buragohain, AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah termed the incident as “unfortunate” and sought an apology for it.

He said, “We investigated the incident and found involvement of an AASU member, identified as Karna Buragohain in it. We have expelled him from AASU with immediate effect.”

After the incident was condemned by all on social media, the leaders of most of the organisations in Philobari area went to meet the teacher on Friday at her residence in Philobari and sought an apology from her.

The teacher broke down before the representatives of the organisations visited her.

The Tinsukia Zila Saikhik Karmachari Manch (teachers-employees’ body) has condemned the incident and appealed to all so that such incidents do not recur in the future.

Meanwhile, the Tinsukia district administration has ordered a Magistrate-level probe into the incident.

A public meeting will be held at Philobari on Saturday to discuss the matter.
