Dimapur-based civil society organisations, under the aegis of the core committee against shifting of the DC’s office, took out a rally here on Tuesday against shifting of the Dimapur deputy commissioner’s office from the present location.

The rally began at the Holy Cross junction and culminated at the DC’s office.

The rallyists, dressed in traditional attire, held placards some of which read “Listen to the voice of the people”, “Democracy listens to common voice” etc.

Addressing the rally, a representative of the Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Forum said they want the DC’s office, which is presently located in an urban area, at a cadastral land and added that they will not allow shifting of the office to any other location at any cost.

Leaders of Naga Council Dimapur, Dimapur Naga Students Union, Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation Dimapur and others also voiced their opposition to the shifting of the DC’s office to a new location.

After the rally, the core committee member submitted a memorandum to the Dimapur DC seeking a response to the ultimatum served by the Dimapur-base civil society organsations to the state chief minister on September 29. The ultimatum was served through the DC.

The organisations in its ultimatum to the government demanded reconsidering the decision on shifting of the DC’s office to a new location and also to cancel its September 7 order, issued by the principal secretary (home), to shift some branches/cells from the present DC’s office to the new DC office complex at Chumukedima within five days with effect from September 29. The deadline ended on Monday.

They lamented that the state government had turned a deaf ear to the demands and grievances of the citizens of Dimapur district till date.

“It is highly deplorable of the government to disdain the voice of its own people even after repeated representations and ultimatum served on several occasions,” it said.

The memorandum also made a mention that the civil society organisations of Dimapur formed the core committee against shifting of the DC’s office vide a resolution at a meeting on October 1.

The committee sought response of the DC to the ultimatum in the interest of the citizens of Dimapur.
