Only one person from Assam managed to clear UPSC this year and his name is Ahmed Hasanuzzaman Choudhury.
An alumni of Jamia Millia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy, is one of the 20 students of the academy to clear the Civil Service Examination. In UPSC 2020, he secured 283rd rank. UPSC is one of the toughest exams in the world, which many aspirants look forward to cracking in order to become an IAS officer.
Choudhury did his schooling at Kendra Vidyalaya, Silchar and National Public School, Guwahati in 2012. Later, in 2017, he completed his B.Tech tech from Jamia Millia Islamia University and then, he started his coaching to prepare for UPSC which lands one to prestigious Government Jobs. This year, the mains examination of UPSC was conducted in January 2021 and after clearing the second round, the personality test for the same was conducted in August and September 2021. Choudhury’s father is a retired chief general manager of Electronic Development Corporation and his grandfather is a retired judge. He is the youngest of the three children of the family. His elder sister, Dr Salma Fedous Choudhury serves as a gynaecologist in Silchar Media College and Hospital.

How Did Ahmed Hasanuzzaman Choudhury Succeed?
In an interview, Choudhury said that his family always focused on providing proper education to the children. As a result, one of his sisters is a doctor and the other is a software engineer. His dream of seeing his name in the Sarkari Result of UPSC took birth while he was studying his engineering in Jamia. His decision was always supported by his father and therefore, he chose not to indulge himself in a private company after the competition of the degree and focused on his UPSC student.
Hasanuzzaman broke many records. Firstly, he is the only person from Assam to crack this exam and secondly, he became the second person from Barak Valley of Assam to crack this exam. The success stories which were missing from Barak Valley are filled by Hasanuzzaman. Addressing the issue, he said that the lack of a success story is the result of not starting the preparation for the exam at an early stage. He stated that many people wait to complete their graduation before becoming serious for the exam which should not be the case. Many students start preparing for the exam right from their school days. He said this is the reason behind the low success rate of UPSC aspirants from Assam.
UPSC Exam Tips
For clearing the UPSC exam, it is important to indulge in self-preparation and self-motivation apart from the study which takes place in the coaching institutes. Being a three-layer examination, it is a risky examination as one can fall short in any of the three stages. Failing even in a single-stage eliminates the student from the race. The same issue was faced by Hasanuzzaman who experienced two successful attempts. However, he managed to keep himself motivated and stayed focused on the examination and hence, the success.

His optional subject was Political Science and International Relations. While preparing for the examination, to assist his optional subject he enrolled himself in Indira Gandhi National Open University to study the same subject and now he also has a Master degree in the same. His father while appreciating his success said that as a government employee, he always wanted his child to crack the exam. Bikram Kairi, Deputy Commission of Majuli, Assam who was the first person to crack UPSC from Barak Valley while commenting on Hasanuzzaman’s success that after around six years, someone from his region managed to crack the UPSC exam indicating that the students have the potential but perhaps a proper platform for nourishing the talent is missing. He further hopes that after seeing the success of Hasanuzzaman, other students are motivated to crack the exam.
UPSC Result This Year
This year has proven to be lucky for many UPSC aspirants. Few students who have grabbed the headlines are Satyam Gandhi, who secured AIR 10 with self-study. His rural background and self-study will surely serve as an inspiration for many. Further, it needs to be noted that Sarthak Agarwal, CBSE 2014 secured AIR 17th. Awasthy S, daughter of a construction labour of Kerala also cleared the UPSC exam this year. Such stories serve as an inspiration for many proving that smart work along with hard work can surely result in success.
