A team of Assam Congress leaders, led by president Bhupen Kumar Borah, visited the victims of Baghjan tragedy in Tinsukia district.
“The people there were heartbroken and they lamented before the team of Congress leaders that they have been left to their fate by the BJP government,” said Bobbeeta Sharma, chairperson of the media department of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).
“It is a matter of great worry that even after a year of the tragedy the promises made have not been fulfilled,” Sharma added in the press statement.
Apart from an interim relief package no other rehabilitation plan and promises have been fulfilled, the statement said.
The Baghjan fire victims were promised Rs 27 crore for building embankment to stop erosion but only the foundation stone was laid as it is the “usual practice of the BJP government everywhere and nothing further has been done”, she said.
The main road is still in deplorable condition, the APCC statement said.

“No effort is seen to promote Magur Beel as a tourist spot. A model hospital was also promised and people are still waiting for it,” it said.
Employment opportunities were promised at the time of disaster for the affected families but the young boys and girls are still waiting for those promises to be fulfilled.
“When the victims go to remind the non-fulfillment of their demands to the local authorities they are turned away time and again,” Sharma mentioned.
“Thus the BJP government’s pompous claims about protecting the interests of the indigenous people of Assam is nothing but mere rhetoric,” the APCC said in the statement.
“Reality is that the BJP government is a party that talks big but actions on the ground are proof of their false promises to the indigenous people of Assam,” it added.
