Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Wednesday chaired the first meeting of State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee constituted for implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 at his conference hall at Janata Bhawan.

“Though the instances of offences against SC and ST communities in the state are very less, the committee must look for right implementation of the Act and awareness activities must be taken at the district level for making the people aware about it,” the chief minister said.

People belonging to all sections of the society must be empowered to live a life of dignity and SC and ST community members must get their due respect, he added.

He also called on the MLAs and public representatives belonging to SC and ST communities to communicate with the government if any incident of atrocity takes place anywhere.

The chief minister also called for better coordination among the departments of Judiciary, Home, WPT and BC, Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of all districts for exact implementation of the Act as envisaged.

Minister of WPT & BC Pramila Rani Brahma, PHED Minister Rihan Daimary, Cultural Affairs Minister Naba Kumar Doley, MP Naba Sarania, several MLAs belonging to SC and ST communities were also present in the State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting.
