Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has lambasted Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over sudden rise in number of incidents relating to police opening fire on accused.

Akhil Gogoi said that under the leadership of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is on the path of becoming a “police state”.

Gogoi’s remark came just minutes after CM Sarma, in the Assembly, stated that encounters in the Assam will continue.

Justifying his statement, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that as along he is the chief minister of Assam, attack on police would not be tolerated.

“Anyone who attacks personnel of Assam police will be dealt with firm hands. I will not compromise on this matter as long as I am the CM,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Launching a scathing attack on the Assam chief minister, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi hinted that if such incidents are to continue, then a dictatorship kind of a situation will emerge in Assam.

“What’s the use of other institutes left. Let him (CM Himanta Biswa Sarma) be the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court, DGP of the State. Assam is on the path of becoming a police state,” Akhil Gogoi said.

“Today’s statement of the Assam CM will encourage the State Police to carry out more encounters,” Gogoi said.

He added: “If what the Assam Police is doing is so right, then why did the State Human Rights Commission take up suo motu cognisance of such incidents on the basis of news reports?”

Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi also appealed the people of Assam to become aware and raise voice against the ‘barbaric’ and ‘nefarious’ design of the Assam Government.
