The Tinsukia district administration has suspended the ongoing vaccination drive in the district after acute shortage of Covid19 vaccines.

The vaccination drive will remain halted until the arrival of new consignment of Covid19 vaccines.

On Sunday, the scheduled vaccination sessions had to be cancelled due to lack of vaccines in the district.

Tinsukia district faced a similar situation on June 27 and June 29 when the vaccination initiative had to be temporarily suspended due to non-availability of vaccines.

The shortage of vaccines has emerged as a major stumbling block for the district which has been struggling to control the surge of Covid19.

“We are currently facing shortage of vaccines because of which the vaccination sessions planned today had to be cancelled. We will resume the inoculation drive as soon as vaccines are available,” Tinsukia deputy commissioner Narsing Pawar said.

Pawar said, “We expect the consignment of vaccines to arrive shortly. As of date, over 2 lakh people have been administered the vaccine in the district.”

“During the 3-day mega vaccination drive in Tinsukia district recently, we managed to vaccinate a record of 45,000 people. Once vaccines are available, we will further intensify the vaccination drive,” he added.

Tinsukia additional deputy commissioner (health) Manjit Borkakoty said the health department plans to vaccinate 1,000-1,200 people in the next couple of days with the few leftover vaccines in the district.

Due to vaccine shortage in many districts of Assam, people have to return back home from the Covid19 vaccine centres without vaccination.

Recently, the government launched a mega vaccination drive across Assam and thousands of people have been vaccinated.

The government has targeted to vaccinate 3 lakh people during the mega drive.
