The Lunglei Battalion of Headquarter 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) carried out a tree plantation drive in three districts of Mizoram on the occasion of Green Mizoram Day.

The three districts where the tree plantation drive was conducted are Lunglei, Lawngtlai and Saiha.

A total of 128 Assam Rifles personnel and 42 civilians of nearby areas participated in the tree plantation drive, the HQ IGAR (East) said in a press statement.

“The tree plantation drive was carried out on the occasion of Green Mizoram Day,” the Assam Rifles statement said.

To commemorate the day on Friday, various types of trees were planted with an aim to create a Green Mizoram.

“Trees provide a number of sustainable benefits to us and reduce the green house effect,” the statement said.

“The Assam Rifles marked the event of Green Mizoram Day by planting 868 saplings in and around the villages and COBs of Parva, Laki, Lungpuk and Tuipang in Mizoram,” it added.

Meanwhile, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga in a tweet on Friday said the has been observing the Green Mizoram Day for the last 23 years.

He said it was started as Green Aizawl Day in 1998 and it evolved to Green Mizoram Day in 1999.

The Mizoram chief minister said the day is observed to “preserve ecological balance”.

Zoramthanga requested everyone to take new steps for a Green Mizoram and for a better Mizoram.

“For 23 years we have observed #GreenMizoramDay(started as Green Aizawl Day in 1998,evolved to Green Mizoram Day in 1999)to preserve ecological balance. Today, I request everyone to take new steps for Green Mizoram – for a better Mizoram. A little goes a long way,” chief minister Zoramthanga tweeted.
