Assam Rifles and customs department have seized 410 grams of heroin at Zokhawthar village in Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The operation was carried out on Friday, Assam Rifles sources said on Saturday.

The joint operation was carried out the basis of specific information, it said.

“The contraband worth Rs 1.64 crore was smuggled from Myanmar,” sources said.

The seized consignment of heroin was handed over to the customs department, it added.

Ongoing smuggling of drugs is a major cause of concern for Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar border.

Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ has continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.

Earlier on May 25, 2021, the troops of Assam Rifles nabbed a Myanmar national with 120 grams of heroin from the NgurIn area in Mizoram.

The Serchhip battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) carried out the operation, the Assam Rifles said in a statement.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles along with Customs Preventive Force Champhai based on specific information, it said.

The approximate value of the seized heroin was around Rs 48,00,000 in the international market, the Assam Rifles had said.
