In a bid to prevent flood and erosion, the boulder pitching works on Lanka river was launched at Sidabari of Amteka area in Lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district.
Sidli MLA Jayanta Basumatary and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) executive member Nilut Swargiary on Friday jointly inaugurated the works.
While launching the project, MLA Basumatary said that the rising water of Lanka river causes flood and erosion in the area every year.
“There was an urgent need to take measures to save the area from flood and erosion, which cause considerable damage in the area every year,” said Basumatary.

He also said that as the state government decided to take every possible steps to make Assam a ‘flood free state’.
BTC EM Nilut Swargiary said, “As the BTR is situated in the foothills of Bhutan, the northern part of the region face common problems like flash floods, erosion and crisis of drinking water.”
“To solve these problems in the region, the BTC administration will take both short-term as well as long-term policies,” he said.
The BTC EM said that the people living in northern part of BTR, from Sankosh to Bwirabkhunda face scarcity of drinking water as the digging of ring-well and installing tube-well were not possible in the area.
Swargiary also said the problem of drinking water crisis will be resolved after the launching of the Indo-Bhutan Foothills Drinking Water Project.
