Due to Covid19 pandemic, there will be no celebration of Ambubachi Mela in Kamakhya Temple this year.

Ambubachi Mela is a famous religious festival, which is celebrated every year in Kamakhya Temple, one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas, located in Guwhati’s Nilachal hills.

Thousands of devotees and pilgrims gather in and around Kamakhya Temple from various parts of the country and abroad.

The Maa Kamakhya Devalaya Parichalana Committee (management committee) in a statement on Friday said: ”
“This is for general information that due to threats of Pandemic COVID-19, the Maa Kamakhya Devalaya will remain closed for devotees till June 30, 2021.”

Only the rituals will be observed during Ambubachi Mahayog, scheduled to be held from June 22, 2021, the statement said.

“Entry of devotees including Sadhu-Sanyasis is totally prohibited,” it said.

There will be no food and lodging facilities at Kamakhya, the temple management committee said.

The temple management committee has sought cooperation for all the devotees.

“Co-operation from everyone is highly solicited in this regard. May Maa bless us all in these difficult times,” it further said.

On Thursday, Assam reported 4,309 new positive cases and 46 more deaths due to Covid19.

The Kamrup Metro district alone reported 386 new positive cases and 5 more deaths on Thursday.

The positivity rate of Assam stood at 4.02% in Assam.

Assam currently has 50,534 active Covid19 cases.

The Kumbh Mela, which was attended by lakhs of people from different parts of the country and the world, drew flak from various quarters as thousands of people participating in the festival tested positive for COVID19.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to appeal to the organisers of the event in Haridwar to keep it symbolic due to the COVID19 crisis.
