A two-day old newborn has reportedly died at a primary health centre (PHC) in Tripura’s Dhalai district due to the alleged negligence on the part of a doctor.

The infant girl, who had been suffering from some congenital complications, reportedly tested positive for Covid-19 at the PHC on Thursday.

As such the doctor, Justin Debbarma refused to attend to the infant and referred her to the district Covid Care Centre.

The parents, Biswakumar Debbarma and Dimple Debbarma rushed their child to the Covid Care Cente for treatment, but she succumbed to her complications on the way.

The parents are residents of Nakful in the Kamalpur sub-division of Dhalai district.

However, when the body of the infant was again tested for Covid-19 at the centre, the report turned out to be negative.

The incident enraged locals, who ransacked the PHC on Thursday evening and thrashed the doctor Justin Bebbarma for his refusal to treat the baby, resulting in her untimely death.

However, the doctor managed to escape from their clutches.

The parents of the child alleged that sheer negligence on the part of the doctor resulted in the unfortunate incident.

“Our baby developed complication soon after her birth, but when we took her for treatment at the PHC the doctor refused to treat her after she tested positive for Covid-19 there,” said Biswakumar Debbarma.

“We rushed our baby to the district Covid Care Centre in a critical condition, but she passed away on the way. There doctors again tested her body for Covid-19 and the results came out negative,” the distressed father said.

“The previous report turned out to be false and we lost our daughter because of this,” a relative said.

Meanwhile, the additional superintendent of police, sub-divisional police officer of Kamalpur, sub-divisional magistrate, chief medical officer and sub-divisional medical officer reached the spot with a huge contingent of police to enquire about the incident.

However, tension continues to prevail in the area.
