A 23-year-old woman has allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at her residence at Sabroom in South Tripura district.

Sources said the woman took the extreme step on Wednesday after a video that depicted her in a compromising position with a man from the neighbourhood was displayed on a screen at a public meeting at Birendra Chowmuhani Bazaar of Betaga ADC village under Sabroom police station.

Sources said following the meeting, a group of locals gathered at the residence of the woman and tortured her.

The mob allegedly dragged the woman out of her house and stripped her. They garlanded her with shoes, shaved her head, and paraded her naked around the village after tying her hands with a rope.

Sources said two local leaders of the BJP were involved in the incident.

The family members of the victim alleged that local BJP leaders Kamal Tripura and Sajal Tripura instigated the mob to torture the woman.

Police have sent her body to Sabroom sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem examination.

No one has been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

A case has been registered at Sabroom police station under sections 323, 354, 306 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

South Tripura SP Kulwant Singh said an inquiry has been initiated and an FIR has been registered against an unknown person.
