At least 5 people, including a senior citizen, woman and children, were injured in Assam’s Darrang district as an earthquake jolted the state on Wednesday morning.
The injured people have been treated in hospitals and they are stated to be out of danger as per reports of the Darrang district administration.
One Umakanta Deka (75), resident of Chamaria village under Pathorighat revenue circle, sustained head injury as he was hit by debris fallen down from the concrete walls of his house during the earthquake.
He was immediately taken to the hospital.

“He (Umakanta Deka) is an asthma patient. So, he was admitted to a hospital in Guwahati. One other injured was also shifted to Guwahati due to serious shoulder injury after falling down while running in panic,” Panchami Choudhury, additional deputy commissioner, in charge of Disaster Management Department of the district, told Northeast Now.
“The other persons, who received minor injuries, were also admitted to the hospital and they are likely to be released as soon as soon the doctor’s observations are over,” Choudhury said.

“As per reports, the new building of Kuwari Pukhuri Model Hospital near Kharupetia and one concrete building at Ward No 3 in Kharupetia town suffered major damage. There are also reports of developing cracks and seepage of water in some farm land areas including Besimari village under Dalgaon revenue circle of the district,” Choudhury said.
“Apart from these, no other report of major damages of roads and government establishments has been received from our field assessment teams under the respective revenue circle officers,” the ADC in charge of disaster management added.
Besides the official report, there are reports of damages of some permanent structures in Mangaldai and Kharupetia town, which were allegedly built violating government guidelines.
In the morning on Wednesday, the people of the district, who were preparing for the day-to -day affairs hurriedly came out of their houses in deep panic and were seen on the streets for the next few minutes even after jolts were felt.
