A huge voter turnout was witnessed on Thursday during the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) elections that took place in the Dibrugarh University premises in Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Since early morning students could be seen standing in long queues waiting for their turn to cast their votes for their preferred candidates.

Out of 4615 students, 4406 students cast their votes in the DUPGSU election that began at 8 am on Thursday.

According to Dibrugarh University authorities, 80 per cent voter turnout was witnessed during the DUPGSU elections.

The university authorities have conducted PGSU election after a gap of two years.

Altogether, 35 candidates are contesting the election this year.

“After two years PGSU election were held in the university. We are happy to caste our vote,” said a Dibrugarh University student.

Earlier, the Dibrugarh University authority had cancelled the PGSU elections citing “disagreement among students relating to filing of nomination papers for conduct of elections”.
