The Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-Guwahati) has said that it is cooperating with the police in the investigations into the sexual assault case that rocked the Institute a couple of days back.
“The Institute has been cooperating with the police on the investigation on the sexual assault of the girl student on campus,” said IIT-Guwahati in a statement on Monday.
“Prima facie, it has been found that the student Utsav Kadam has committed an act that has been considered a serious criminal offense by the judiciary leading to his arrest on 3rd April 2021 by the North Guwahati Police,” IIT-Guwahati added in its statement.
IIT-Guwahati further informed that the accused student – Utsav Kadam “has been suspended” from the Institute.
“Utsav Kadam has been suspended from the Institute with immediate effect from 4th April 2021 as recommended by the Students Disciplinary Committee,” IIT-Guwahati administration further said.
IIT-Guwahati further said that the four other students, who were earlier questioned by the police in connection with the case “have been isolated from each other on campus and will be retained on campus for further police investigations as well as internal investigations”.
“These acts are a serious violation of the disciplinary rules of the institute, compromising the safety and security of students, hostel boarders and residents of the campus and disruptive to the institute environment,” IIT-Guwahati said.

IIT-Guwahati further sated: “The institute condemns such heinous acts in the strongest possible terms. The Institute is also putting in place enhanced safety and security measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.”
IIT-Guwahati administration further cautioned a section of media from “filing unverified reports” asking them to report ‘responsibly’ over the incident.
“Some sections of the media have been filing unverified reports about the incident and about the Institute discharging the girl student from GMCH without following doctors’ advice. The Institute would like to clarify that the medical report is awaited and only after this the nature of assault can be confirmed. Also, all due procedures were followed as per hospital guidance for discharge of the girl student,” said IIT-Guwahati.

IIT-Guwahati added: “This is a very sensitive issue with implications on the future well-being of the girl student. Media is requested to report responsibly only verified news and is also requested not to sensationalize the issue.”
