Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday played hard on ‘Hindutva’ sentiments to garner Hindu votes in the Barak Valley ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
He specifically targeted the large Hindu Bengali community residing in the Barak valley while addressing an election rally in Barkhola constituency in Cachar district on behalf of BJP candidate Amalendu Das.
The BJP has this time denied ticket to its sitting MLA Kishjor Nath and instead fielded Amalendu Das from the constituency.
Drawing on the Indian independence movement, Yogi Adityanath said that the Congress’ ‘divide and rule’ policy had led to India’s partition into two countries.
“Beware of Congress’ divisive politics. Pakistan and later Bangladesh was formed as a result of this politics. Otherwise, these two countries would have been part of India,” said Yogi Adiyanath.
“You cannot forget how Hindus were persecuted in Bangladesh, how Hindu settlements are burnt down and temples destroyed,” he said.
The Uttar Pradesh chief minister also campaigned in UIdharbond and Silchar.
The BJP is banking greatly on the votes of the Hindu Bengali community in the state to win the Assam Assembly elections.
