Talks are on between Grand Alliance partners – Congress and RJD for another 4 seats in the other two phases of the Assam Assembly elections.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which recently had joined the Grand Alliance has already fielded Hira Devi Choudhury as its candidate from the important Tinsukia constituency.
In the first phase of Assam Assembly elections, the Congress will contest 43 of the 47 Assembly seats, while its allies AIUDF, Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPI-ML and RJD would contest in one seat each.
The RJD has been allotted the Tinsukia Assembly to contest.
RJD will be making its electoral debut in Assam by fighting the Tinsukia seat.
Hira Devi Choudhury, is a graduate in history and a former member of the Assam Mahila Congress.
It may be mentioned here that the Tinsukia seat was allotted to the RJD following Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s request to the Assam Congress leadership to leave the seat for the RJD to contest.

RJD has said that the Tinsukia seat was allotted to the RJD as Priyanka Gandhi wants to strengthen the Congress’ ties with the RJD.
Hira Devi Choudhury filed her nomination before the returning officer at Tinsukia on Tuesday.
Workers of both the Congress and the RJD accompanied Hira Devi Choudhury for the nomination filing.
With Congress putting up no candidate in Tinsukia, it is expected to be direct fight between RJD candidate Hira Devi Choudhury and BJP candidate Sanjay Kishan.
RJD candidate Hira Devi Choudhury may emerge as the dark horse of the Grand Alliance and create a major upset.
