Former Asom Sahitya Sabha president Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and he has been declared party candidate for the Sipajhar Assembly constituency.

Earlier, Northeast Now reported that Rajbongshi, who expected a party ticket from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to contest from the Kalaigaon Assembly constituency, resigned from the party as its alliance partner BJP refused to leave the seat to AGP.

The BJP on Friday named Madhuram Deka as a BJP candidate for the Kalaigaon constituency.

Rajbongshi resigned from the AGP on Friday night.

He joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in November last year.

Rajbongshi joined the BJP in presence of Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Rajya Sabha MP Bhubaneswar Kalita and Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das.

After joining the BJP, Rajbongshi said, “I have joined the BJP keeping for the interests of the people. I will work as advised by the party.”

Meanwhile, Rupesh Gowala resigned as the general secretary of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), which is affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) a trade union wing of the Indian National Congress and joined the BJP.

Rupesh Gowala has been declared as the BJP candidate for Doom Dooma Assembly constituency.

After his joining, Gowala said, “The tea community people have sought the BJP. So, I have joined the BJP.”

Parliamentarian Pallab Lochan Das tweeted: “I heartily welcome them both to BJP family. Today, former Assam Sahitya Sabha President Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi & ACMS General Secretary Sri Rupesh Gowala joined
