Kokrajhar police has rescued 18 cattle heads and arrested one person from New Panbari in the district.

These cattle were reportedly smuggled from outside the district.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted an operation in and around Bagribari and New Panbari areas under the Kazigoan Police Station on Saturday and rescued the aforesaid cattle.

The police team was led by Parbatjhora sub-divisional police officer Trinayan Bhuyan.

Hashem Ali, who had been absconding for long, was picked up by the police from the New Panbari area.

The police also recovered two-wheelers and a mobile handset from the spot during the operation.

“Considering the size of the cattle, they seem to be from outside Assam,” said Trinayan Bhuyan.

“We have registered a case. During interrogation, the accused named a few other persons involved in cattle smuggling. Efforts are on to nab them,” Bhuyan said.
