Meingan and KC Kakhunguiliu won the 10 km Tamenglong Mini Marathon in the boys and girls category respectively organized by Assam Rifles on Saturday.

The mini marathon was organized to mark the death anniversary of the ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandi and pay homage to the freedom fighters who laid their lives for the country’s independence.

The event was a part of the celebration of Shaheed Diwas organized by 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sectors Assam Rifles (IGAR, East).

Mahatma Gandhi, who led the nation to attain Independence and inspired numerous other movements for civil rights and freedom around the world, the Commandant led the public of Tamenglong to pay floral tributes to the ‘Father of the Nation’ and other martyrs of the nation.

People from different walks of life also paid homage at Jadonang Park in Tamenglong, said a defence press release.

Bapu’s favourite bhajans filled the atmosphere with patriotism.

The 10 km mini marathon, organised for the public of Tamenglong, was flagged off by the Commandant.

The event was organized to spread the message of unity, peace and non-violence as professed by the ‘Father of the Nation’.

The locals along with security force personnel rubbed shoulders with each other to foster bonds of friendship and brotherhood.

Emphasizing on the importance of running which can significantly improve physical and mental health, the participants were urged to take up running for fitness.

Cash prizes and medals were given to the winners of the first three positions in both boys and girls categories.

Later, the locals joined the Assam Rifles personnel in observing two-minute silence in memory of the Indian martyrs.

All works, movement stopped for two minutes as a mark of respect to the martyrs.

Remembering the freedom fighters and their contribution towards achieving freedom was exerted.

The local youths were urged to preserve, protect and enrich the hard-earned freedom and to promote a sense of national integration and commitment to goals and ideals.
