Members of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) wearing black badges on Saturday staged a sit-in demonstration at Jorhat in Assam during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sivasagar.
The sit-in demonstration wearing black badges was part of the AASU’s 3-day stir against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The AASU has been demanding repeal of the controversial CAA that was passed in the Parliament in December 2019.
Apart from scrapping of the CAA, the AASU also demanded detection and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi migrants, withdrawal of draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) 2020 notification.
The AASU has also demanded for early implementation of Clause VI of the Assam Accord.

An AASU member said that the protest has been staged on the day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit to Sivasagar district to highlight the “negligence towards Assam by the Centre and non-fulfilment of the promises made by PM Modi”.
The AASU also denounced the BJP-led State Government for using force to prevent the torch rallies by the students’ body across the State on Friday evening.
AASU had organised ‘Mashaal’ (torch) rallies across the State to register their protest against the CAA on Friday.
The AASU further slammed Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during the protest.
The AASU said, “Sonowal has forgot that in the past he used to protest in the streets for protection of the rights and interests of the indigenous people of the State.”
