Congress on Tuesday formed a ‘Grand Alliance’ with Maulana Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF and four other parties to fight the upcoming Assam Assembly polls 2021.

The ‘Grand Alliance’ has been formed with parties including Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), MP Ajit Bhuyan-led Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML).

The news was confirmed by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora during a press conference in a city hotel on Tuesday.

Bora informed that they have joined hands to prevent the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from coming to power again in Assam.

The decision to fight the Assembly polls was taken after an important meeting held among the Congress, AIUDF, Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML).

After the meeting, the ‘Grand Alliance’ was announced during a press conference held in presence of Congress leader and Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghe and Congress’ Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh.

The press conference was attended by AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam, MLA Rashid Haque Choudhury, Anchalik Gana Morcha leaders Ajit Bhuyan, Manjit Mahanta, leaders of CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML).

While addressing the media, Ripun Bora said the ‘Grand Alliance’ will have one manifesto.

He said, Congress has taken the decision to form the ‘Grand Alliance’ after discussions with the people of Assam.

He said discussions are also going on regarding the selection of the constituencies.

“Currently, only these parties will be there in the ‘Grand Alliance’. The door is open for all. If any party comes forward, we will welcome them,” Bora added.
