The All Tripura Government Doctors’ Association, Central Working Committee on Friday appealed to all doctors of the state to join government service only if they can protect themselves while on duty.
The statement was issued in relation to an incident in which attendants of a patient assaulted Tamal Sarkar, a doctor in a government hospital on Thursday night in Khowai district.
There have been several such instances of attacks on doctors in the state in the recent past.
Sarkar was reportedly on duty in the emergency block of the Khowai District hospital when a few attendants requested him to examine a patient, who was inside a vehicle parked outside the hospital.
When the doctor requested them to bring in the patient as it was not possible for him to leave the emergency block at that time, they attacked him.
The superintendent of the hospital confirmed the incident.

However, the police have not filed an FIR against the assaulters so far.
The ATGDA said in its statement that doctors in the state should join the government service only if they can defend themselves while on duty as no one will come forward to protect them.
“The police, law, ministers and the administration are all busy with important engagements and hence, have no time to protect us from being assaulted in the hands of the public,” the statement said.
The statement also said that doctors should be in government jobs only if they are ready to endure humiliation or else join politics, do business or join any other profession to retain their self esteem.
“How many times should we protest against such incidents by posting on Facebook or submitting memorandums to the ministers or police? We are ashamed to protest now,” said the doctor’s body.
The attackers have allegedly been backed by the ruling party in the state, which is why the police have refrained from taking any action against them.
