The business community in Jorhat, Titabar, Mariani and Teok towns closed their shops and establishments as a mark of respect to the former three-time Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday.
Gogoi’s mortal remains were consigned to flames at Nabagraha Cremation Ground in Guwahati on Friday.
The shops, both small and large ones, kept their shutters down in response to a call given by traders’ bodies of the towns in the district.

In Mariani and Titabar, the shops remained closed for the past three days.
Tarun Gogoi had contested and won the Assembly elections from Titabar Legislative Assembly constituency, which includes Mariani revenue circle, four consecutive times.
With the state government declaring a half-holiday on Thursday in honour of the veteran leader’s last rites being performed on Friday and shops remaining closed, there were few people on the roads and few vehicles were seen plying.
Homage was paid to Gogoi at a condolence meeting organized at the Jorhat Press Club.
Several organizations like Jorhat district units of AASU, AJYCP and an NGO ‘The Event, also attended the event.
Floral tributes were offered before the portrait of the former chief minister and lamps lit up by those who attended the meet.
A prayer for the eternal peace of the departed soul was held.
Several persons spoke about the contributions of the ace statesman’s contributions towards Assam.
Jorhat Press Club members recalled the immense support extended by Gogoi in establishing the press club from financial aid to allotment of the land during his tenure.
