Assam government has declared half-holiday on Thursday as a mark of respect to the former three-time Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

Tarun Gogoi, who died at 5.34 pm on Monday, will be cremated with full state honours at the Nabagraha Cremation Ground on Thursday.

According to a government order, the state government, semi-government offices, public sector undertakings, corporations, boards and educational institutions will remain closed from 1 pm on Thursday.

In a WT message to the respective officials, the secretary to the government of Assam, general administration (A) department, said: “The state government of Assam expresses with profound sorrow at the sad demise of Sri Tarun Gogoi, former chief minister of Assam.”

“As a mark of respect to the departed soul, the Govt. of Assam has declared half holiday at 1 pm on the day of cremation on 26th November 2020,” the WT message said.

“During this period, all state govt. offices/ semi-govt. offices/ public sector undertakings/ corporations/ boards/ educational institutions, etc. will remain closed,” it said.

Tarun Gogoi died at Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) due to post-Covid19 complications.

The mortal remains of the former Assam chief minister have been kept at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

Thousands of people from different parts of Assam and outside have paid tribute to the Congress stalwart. He was 86 at the time of his demise.

The district administration of Kamrup Metro has readied the Nabagraha Cremation Ground for the cremation of former chief minister Gogoi.
