Tagore Cultural Complex

Meghalaya government has approached the Ministry of Culture for setting up of a Tagore Cultural Complex in Shillong.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday met Prahlad Singh Patel, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, and reportedly discussed about the proposed Tagore Cultural Complex at Rilbong in Shillong.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2011 had introduced the Tagore Cultural Complex project to nurture performing art talents across India.

But for the people of Shillong, the proposed Tagore Cultural Complex would mean strengthening their bond with Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore, India’s first Nobel laureate.

Tagore had long spent time in the beautiful city, composing and writing some of his immortal masterpieces like Raktakarabi and the Shesher Kabita.

According to official documentation, Rabindranath Tagore had visited Shillong in 1919, 1923 and 1927, and had his longest stay at Brookside, a bungalow at Rilbong.

In fact, the Meghalaya government has proposed for the Tagore Cultural Complex in the Brookside complex in Shillong. It would be the first Tagore Cultural Complex in Northeast India.
