Two persons have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly duping an Indian doctor of Rs 31 lakh with a lamp, which they claimed is an ‘Aladdin’s lamp’.

The Uttar Pradesh police arrested the duo on the basis of a complaint lodged by the doctor with the police in Meerut earlier this week.

In the complaint, according to media reports, the doctor alleged that he had met the two persons when he started treating a woman, whom he understood as their mother.

While the complainant has been identified as Laiq Khan, the arrested persons have been identified as Ikramuddin and his brother-in-law, Anis.

A media report quoted a police officer as saying that Laiq Khan, who apparently practices Ayurveda and claims to be a doctor, used to treat the mother of the accused.

“Gradually they started telling me about a baba (godman) whom they claimed also visited their home. They started brainwashing me and asked me to meet this baba,” a media report quoted the doctor as saying.

The doctor then met the godman.

He reportedly told that during one of the visits, it seemed Aladdin actually appeared in front of him, but later he realised that one of the accused dressed up as the iconic figure.

Ikramuddin reportedly promised the doctor that he had a lamp that would bring him wealth and health.

Anis and Ikramuddin have been booked under sections 386 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The duo offered the doctor the lamp for Rs 1.50 crore with a promise that it would bring wealth, health and good fortune, but settled for a down payment of Rs 31 lakh.

Finally, they agreed to sell the lamp for Rs 70 lakh saying that he would not use the lamp for six months otherwise the genie would destroy his entire family.

A report quoted a police officer as saying that Ikramuddin has confessed to have duped the doctor.

The police officer said Ikramuddin even tried to convince the police about the powers of the lamp.

Meanwhile, the third suspect, who is a woman, is absconding.
