In protest against the passage of the farm bills, the Tripura Congress burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Agartala on Monday.

The Tripura Congress workers took out a procession to the Raj Bhavan.

The workers marched from Agartala Advisor Chaumuhani to the Raj Bhavan in support of the farmers and in protest against the “anti-farmer” law.

However, they were stopped from proceeding further by the police at Colonel Chaumohani area.

The procession was participated by former state Congress president Birjit Sinha, Congress leader Sushant Chakraborty, National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) leader Samrat Roy and activists of various organizations of the party.

As the police prevented them from moving further, the protesters burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Modi.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday signed all the three controversial farm bills that are at the centre of a huge political storm and cost the ruling BJP its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Flagging them as “historic” reforms in the agri sector, the Centre has said it would help the country’s farmers proceed into the 21st century, helping them get better price for produce.

But the country’s farmers’ organizations and the opposition parties are claiming that these bills are against the interests of the farmers.

Talking to the media, a senior leader of the Tripura Congress, Birjit Sinha said, “We demand scrapping of the anti-farmer bills. Now, the Narendra Modi government has announced a war against the farmers. Congress will continue to protest unless the Centre scraps the bills.”
