Kokrajhar Police have arrested the prime accused in the Pramila Narzary murder case.

The arrested person has been identified as 29-year-old Debaraj alias Ganesh Narzary, a resident of Ramfalbil area.

Pramila Narzary was found murdered under mysterious circumstances near Bishmuri area under Kokrajhar police station on September 9, 2020.

Debaraj was arrested during an operation led by Binanda Basumatary, officer-in-charge of Kokrajhar police station and Rajani Rabha, in-charge of Bismuri police outpost on Saturday.

“During investigations, it came to light that the woman, who has been murdered, had been in a relationship with Debaraj since 2017 and was pressuring him to marry her,” said police.

“Debaraj, who is a married man and father of two young children, did not agree to marry the woman,” police said.

Pramila Narzary, an employee of the Sericulture department in Kokrajhar, was also a married woman and mother of three children.

She tied the knot with another man after the death of her first husband a few years back.

Police said, “On the day of the murder, the two left Kokrajhar in the afternoon on Debaraj’s scooty and headed towards Bongaigaon to get married but returned back.”

“On reaching Bishmuri late in the evening, Debaraj stopped the scooty in an isolated place along the National Highway on the pretext of relieving himself, took out a khukri (knife) and slit her throat and dumped the body there. After committing the murder, he went to his sister’s place at Runikhata Ambari in Chirang and was hiding there,” police said.

On Friday, he came home from where the police managed to nab him.

“He has confessed to committing the crime,” said police.

A case (No. 505/2020 u/s 302 IPC) has been registered against him at Kokrajhar police station.

The accused has been remanded to four-day police custody for further investigation.
