Sheikh Shah Alam

Former AIUDF legislator Sheikh Shah Alam has faced trouble as two FIRs have been lodged against him on Tuesday for allegedly making communally provocative statements at a public meeting in Goalpara district on Sunday.

Social activist Kamal Kumar Medhi lodged an FIR against Alam at Panbazar police station here while another complaint was lodged against him at Jorhat sadar police station by the convener of Jorhat unit of the Bajrang Dal, Dibyajyoti Hazarika.

In his complaint, Medhi alleged that Alam had made comments that could trigger communal violence in the state. “We have received the complaint but since the incident happened in Goalpara district we have forwarded it to the concerned police station in Goalpara,” The Telegraph quoted a top police official as saying.

Alam had resigned from AIUDF on Monday alleging autocratic behaviour by party chief Badruddin Ajmal.

Hours after Alam sent his resignation letter, AIUDF general secretary Champak Kalita issued a press statement on Monday saying he had allegedly made a controversial statement to attack certain section of the society at an organisational meeting of the party at Sonari in Goalpara district.

“AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal snatched his mike and said the AIUDF did not support it and rather opposed it,” the statement said.

Alam said he never talked about attacking a section of the society. “If Kalita has made such an allegation I will file a case against him,” he said.
