Controversy is surrounding the Meghalaya government over the selection of candidates under the state quota for admission to the four-year degree courses of BSc (Honours) Agriculture at the College of Agriculture, Imphal, Manipur for the academic session 2020-21.
A letter from the Meghalaya director of agriculture to the Dean of College of Agriculture, Imphal, informed about the nomination of 14 students against the 14 seats allotted to the State of Meghalaya for admission to the four years degree of BSc (Honours) Agriculture for 2020-21 academic session.
The selected students should report to the Dean of College of Agriculture, Imphal, Manipur on or before September 1 at 11 am, along with all original documents.
However, criticisms evoked over the selection of three candidates – two SC, and one OT – from the state thereby depriving ST candidates from the Khasi community, while seven ST candidates were selected from the Garo community.
The Education Cell of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has also expressed shock and resentment over the selection of students from the SC and OT categories under the reservation meant for Khasi.
KSU leader and chairman Education cell, R Kharjana, said that the Meghalaya agriculture department and the agriculture college should clarify for taking away the quota meant for students from the Khasi community and demanded removal of the candidates from the SC and OT categories.
