Assam’s former table tennis player Nipjyoti Barua, who tested positive for COVID19, passed away at Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on Saturday.

Barua, who represented India in various table tennis championships, was in home quarantine after he tested positive for COVID19 recently.

According to sources, he had no co-morbidity.

He was admitted to the GMCH last Wednesday after his condition deteriorated and also received plasma therapy in the hospital

But he succumbed to infections on Saturday.

However, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who announces the list of patients who die of COVID19 in Assam, is yet to declare Barua’s demise as COVID19 death.

Barua did his schooling from Don Bosco School, Guwahati.

A brilliant student, Barua studied at Cotton College (now Cotton University) and Gauhati University.

In Class 7, he emerged as the national champion in table tennis in his age group.

He played for India in the 4th Junior Asian Cup TT Championship 1989 held at New Delhi and the US Open TT 1990 held at Baltimore in the USA.
