The bonded MBBS passed out students have been called to work in government hospitals by Meghalaya government asking all of those who had signed the bond to report within this month, failing which action would be taken against them.

The government is facing acute shortage of doctors while fighting the COVID-19.

Admitting acute shortage of doctors, Director of Health Service (MI), Dr Aman War said on Saturday said that the Meghalaya government had sent many candidates to study MBBS on the state quota by signing a bond with them.

“Since they have signed the bond, it is natural for them to work for the state in various government hospitals. They are not supposed to work in other hospitals or else will be forced to issue a notice that they should repay the bond amount ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh,” Dr War said.

The DHS said that those who do not want to serve in the government, should remember at that time when they wanted to pursue their MBBS, they got free medical seat through the state government.

“That’s why we urge them to join and serve in government hospitals,” he said.

“We have approximately 50 MBBS passed out students and those who are here working in some other hospitals, we asked them to come and report to the government. The state is facing shortage of doctors and we are going to advertise for filling up of 120 vacancies,” the DHS said.

The DHS said that those who failed to report to the directorate of health and family welfare within this month, the government would take action and publish their names.
