A 38-year-old businessman, identified as Amit Jalan, committed suicide at Fancy Bazar in Guwahati on Wednesday.

The businessman committed suicide by hanging in his residence at Fancy Bazar, the commercial hub in the city.

The news of the businessman’s death comes amid lockdown in Guwahati.

The COVID19 pandemic and consequent lockdowns have severely affected the business fraternity along with other sections of the people.

In order to contain the spread of COVID19, the Assam government imposed lockdown in entire Kamrup Metro district for two week with effect from June 29-12 and the lockdown was extended for another week from July12-19.

According to police, the businessman committed suicide in his residence at 10 in the morning by hanging with the help of a gamosa.

As his family members came to know about the incident, they without any delay cut the gamosa to get him down but till then he passed away, police said.

On being informed a team from Panbazar police station rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

The body of the businessman has been sent to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for conducting post-mortem.

“Investigation is on,” police said.

According to the deceased’s family members, Jalan had been passing through tremendous mental pressure due to the losses in his business caused due to COVID19 pandemic.
