Despite the spike in the COVID-19 cases across the country, ICMR director general Balram Bhargava said there is no community transmission of the coronavirus pandemic in India.

“India is such a large country and prevalence is very low. India is not in community transmission,” reported Hindustan Times quoting the Indian Council of Medical director-general.

Stating that the lockdown measures were successful in preventing the spread of the virus, Bhargava said that ICMR found about 0.73 per cent of the population in 15 districts showed a prevalence of past exposure to infection.

Community transmission is the state when the disease is in its third stage and the source of its origin is not known.

The virus in this stage is present in the community and can infect people with no history – either of travel to or contact with infected people and areas.

In short, at this point, everyone is at risk of catching it.
