Noted filmmaker-screenwriter Basu Chatterjee passed away on Thursday morning in Mumbai at the age of 93.

Chatterjee will always be remembered for movies like Baton Baton Mein, Rajanigandha, Shaukeen, Choti Si Baat, among others.

He also directed several series for Doordarshan among which Rajani and Byomkesh Bakshi are among the most popular and greatly admired even today.

Ashoke Pandit, the president of Filmmaker and Indian Film & TV Directors’ Association, tweeting the news said, “I am extremely grieved to inform you all the demise of Legendary Filmmaker Basu Chatterjee ji.”

“His last rites will be performed today at Santacruz cremation at 2 pm. It’s a great loss to the industry. Will miss you Sir. #RIPBasuChaterjee,” the tweet added.

Chatterjee, along with filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Bhattacharya, is considered as the pioneers of the middle-of-the-road cinema.

He worked both in Hindi as well as Bengali cinema and Chatterjee’s films were considered to be more realistic.

Several Bollywood celebrities have condoled Chatterjee’s demise.
