A 31-year-old constable of Delhi Police died of coronavirus on Wednesday, making it the first fatality of the department.

Delhi police commissioner SN Shrivastava expressed his condolences to the policeman’s family and assured them of providing assistance.

“The sudden demise of late Constable Amit Kumar from PS Bharat Nagar has saddened the police fraternity,” Shrivastava tweeted.

“We stand by his family in this hour of grief and pray to the Almighty to provide strength to bear this loss. All assistance to his family will be provided,” he added.

As per reports, the constable was posted at the Bharat Nagar Police Station in northwest Delhi.

He was taken to the Deep Chand Bandhi Hospital after he had fallen sick on Tuesday.

However, the constable was later taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after his condition worsened.

He was later declared to be dead by the doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

The constable’s samples which were sent for COVID-19 tests came out positive on Wednesday.

Delhi has 5104coronavirus cases, with 64 deaths, and1468 recoveries, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases in India surged to 49391 on Wednesday.

The death toll due to coronavirus in the country is 1694 so far and the number of active cases is 33514.

A total of 14182 people suffering from coronavirus have either been cured or discharged in the country so far.
