A Kolkata based NGO ‘Molded and Minority Development Council'(MMDC) has requested Assam Government to provide essential commodities on priority basis to Assamese people who are stranded at various places of West Bengal.
The NGO mailed a letter to state chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to help those stranded due to sudden nationwide lockdown called to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
Through the letter, MMDC has tried to draw the attention of Assam Government on behalf of Assamese people who are stranded in West Bengal and are facing many problems as scarcity of food, money, lodging problem, etc.
“At present with our NGO’s touch there are around 150 stranded Assamese people. We are trying to help them with essential commodities as per our capacity,” said Raju Ghosh, founder chairman of MMDC over phone.
“The Assamese people stranded due to lockdown in West Bengal are mainly daily wage workers who have lost their jobs, and people who came for job interview and medical treatment,” Ghosh said.
Ghosh also informed that the NGO has also written letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ministry of Railways and chief minister of West Bengal Mamta Banerjee to help those people immediately bring them back to the State at Government expenditure after lockdown is lifted.
