Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday visited Karbi Anglong and took stock of the preparedness in the district in view of the COVID19 pandemic.

During his visit the chief minister informed that the state government has decided to build five state-of-the-art hospitals to fight against such a pandemic in the future.

He landed in Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) stadium on a helicopter two hours behind schedule and headed towards the Circuit House for a discussion with the district administration and all concerned.

In an interaction with the media at the Circuit House, the Assam chief minister appealed to the people of Assam to honour the plea of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to maintain social distancing during the lockdown.

He said, “To fight against COVID-19 for the long term and in accordance with the appeal of the Prime Minister of India for social distancing, we should maintain it sincerely during the 21-day lockdown.”

Sonowal requested the people of both Brahmaputra and Barak valley, hills and plains to follow it for the safety of health of everyone in all the 33 districts of Assam.

“Everyone should be made aware of the situation so that we are coronavirus free. Steps are being taken to provide essential and emergency services to the people at their homes so that no one suffers from lack of food,” he said.

He also informed that the health department is working hard in taking measures for the sake of the people.

“I thank all those ministers, MPs, MLAs, individuals and organisations who have offered their help in this time of trouble. Under the leadership of health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the health department is prepared for any eventuality in all districts, health centres, and hospitals,” he said.

“We have taken a decision to build five state-of-the-art hospitals to fight against such pandemic in the future,” the chief minister said.

Later the chief minister also visited Diphu Medical College and Hospital (old block) and inspected the isolation ward and ICU facilities.

He also held a discussion with the district administration on its preparedness to deal with COVID-19 outbreak in a meeting held at Diphu Circuit House.

Minister for Hills Areas Development Sum Ronghang, MP Haren Singh Bey, MLA Nomal Momin, CEM of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ranghang, DC Mukul Kumar Saikia, senior police officials, and health functionaries were present in the meeting.
