Following fear among the people due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus in China, the Meghalaya Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department has clarified that consumption of poultry and poultry products is safe.

A statement issued on Friday evening by the Director of AH & Veterinary department said according to the notification of the Government of India on February 10, 2020 regarding the issue of consumption of livestock and poultry product and in context to the Novel Corona (Covid-19) Virus, it is clarified that poultry has not been found to be involved in transmission of Covid-19 to human so far in any report, globally.

“Hence, consumption of poultry and poultry products may be considered safe,” the statement said.

However, the department stressed that the general principles of hygiene may be followed as per suggestion of WHO/OIE.
