Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi was on Thursday rushed to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) following health complications.

Gogoi was taken to the GMCH from Guwahati Central Jail after he complained off dental and bone ache besides eye problems.

The KMSS chief has been lodged in Guwahati Central Jail since December 27 last year.

Akhil was arrested by Assam police in Jorhat on December 12, a day after the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019, as a “preventive measure” amid anti-CAA protests.

On December 13, Guwahati police registered a suo moto case against him.

The case was handed over to NIA on December 14, which booked him under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

He was taken to the medicine department and then to the ophthalmology, orthopaedics, cardiology, pathology and radiology departments before being taken back to jail.

Akhil exhorted the people of Assam to make the anti-CAA movement stronger in the state.

“The anti-CAA agitation has to be made stronger and compel the government to scrap the amended citizenship act,” Gogoi told reporters at GMCH campus.
