Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday reviewed the present situation of Assam in a meeting with chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present in the meeting.
Sources said during the meeting, union home minister Shah assured Assam chief minister Sonowal of providing all needed help to maintain law and order situation in Assam.
The meeting was held amidst widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Assam.
The meeting that took place at the union home minister’s Krishna Menon Marg residence continued for more than one hour.
Sonowal also briefed Shah about the preparation for the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games 2020 scheduled to start in Guwahati from Friday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was supposed to inaugurate the festival, has cancelled his visit to the state following continuous protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday held a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and is believed to have discussed the possibilities of giving constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people of the state, officials said.
According to reports, the union home minister also discussed giving constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people of Assam as per the provisions of the Assam Accord signed in 1985.
The Assam Accord provides for the detection and deportation of all illegal immigrants, who entered the country after the midnight of March 24, 1971, and living in the state, irrespective of their religion while Clause 6 of the Accord provides for giving constitutional safeguard.
The meeting reportedly lasted for two hours.
