Sivasagar district in eastern Assam is hosting a unique event – a rural sports meet.
The meet is being organized by Kristi Bikash Samaj is association with the district sports and youth affairs department.
Notably, the rural sports meet is being actively supported by the locals of Konwarpur on the outskirt of Sivasagar town.
The rural sports meet is being organized at the Karigaon Bali field at Konwarpur.
The meet was inaugurated by Sivasagar deputy commissioner Dr M S Lakshmi Priya on Wednesday.
While inaugurating the rural sports meet, the deputy commissioner said such sporting events encourage the spirit of sportsmanship among the budding sports persons of the rural areas.
Addressing the gathering that consisted former sports persons, young and budding ones of the district apart from a sizeable local public, Dr M S Lakshmi Priya said sports has a vital role to play for the overall development of the district.
She also wished the organizers a grand success of the event and said this event will encourage other localities to organize similar sporting events.
The rural sports meet that was kicked off on Wednesday witnessed a inaugural football match between players of two nearby villages.
The sports event will again resume on January 3 and will continue till January 5.
The concluding programme will be held on January 23 next year.
