One boy identified as Farhan Nadim died on the spot when the gearless scooter he was driving was hit from behind by a speeding bus.

The bus which belonged to the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) was running at a high speed when it hit the deceased near Adabari bus stand.

“I was standing near a shop when I heard a screech followed by a large crashing noise. I rushed towards the direction of the noise I found a boy was lying dead on the road,” an onlooker.

“Some people, who were present there, identified the deceased. He was a resident of Garigaon,” he added.

The driver and the helper of the bus fled from the spot and the bus was later seized by the police.

“It is always risky to drive at a high speed at any time of the day. The driver was in a hurry and that too at peak hours. He was inviting trouble,” said Azad Hussain, a resident of Adabari.

“I live just beside the Adabari mosque. I have a tailoring shop here. Every day I witness at least a dozen accidents- some normal while a few fatal,” he added.

“The drivers- both four-wheelers and two-wheelers- drive rashly due to which accidents like these have become common,” Hussain further said.

A case has been registered against the bus and the police are on the look-out for the driver and his assistant.
